Close-Up Nature Photography

This course focuses on close-up and macro photography in nature and is intended for anyone who wants to capture the intricacies of the world around us. For users of both film and digital SLR cameras that allow manual exposure settings or exposure compensation. Your camera should support interchangeable lenses; macro lens not required, but helpful. A textbook is required, and will be discussed at the first class. Weather permitting, an optional field trip on 4/24 will be dedicated to close-up photography of spring wildflowers.

Studio and Natural Light Portraits

This class is for the intermediate photographer and will focus on taking studio and natural light portraits. A digital SLR camera with flash hot shoe is required, along with a basic understanding of the camera functions. External flash would be helpful. Discussion will include light styles, types of lights, accessories, solo and group portraits. Other topics include lens selection, outdoor portraits, and using Photoshop to improve your images. Off Camera Flash Photography

Learning about your off camera flash and how to use it can dramatically improve your photographs. You will learn the keys to using your external flash off of your camera, how to diffuse it, and how to see the light. This class is an extension of the portrait photography class and is for intermediate students. We will visit a couple of local scenic locations to learn more about how to take great portraits. High Dynamic Range Photography

HDR is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminance between light and dark areas of a scene. We’ll discuss how HDR photography can be used to expand your photographic skills and will have a Saturday outing to practice skills learned. The final class will provide a class critique of student images from the class outing. Students should have a camera that allows setting of shutter speed. Although not a requirement, being able to capture images in raw format is preferable. Required text: The Complete Guide to High Dynamic Range Digital Photography by Ferrell McCollough (approx. $17).

Everyday Sterling Earrings

Learn to make a petite, simple pair of earrings, while focusing on your wire skills. We will hand-craft, form, and hammer earrings from sterling silver wire and a few beads. Super lightweight, you can’t even tell you are wearing them, but you will wear them every day. Some experience with making earrings a plus, but not required. You will practice with copper wire first, then finish one pair sterling earrings in class. Take your wire wrapping skills further! We will be wire wrapping a cabochon (a flat-bottomed, domed gemstone) in sterling wire to create a pendant. Hand tools will be available to borrow. Hand-Stamped Pendants - Intermediate

Make a personalized pendant out of sterling discs. The pendant charms are hand stamped using individual letter stamping tools. There are so many possibilities! Make a necklace with your kids names for you or grandma. Add a birthstone dangle and you have a beautiful, unique necklace. We will practice in class using scrap materials first, then make a few pendants. Some experience with jewelry making is recommended.
